The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Hamilton is both a living archive and a dynamic architectural space, purpose-built to preserve and celebrate Canada’s military aviation history. Located at the John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport, the museum’s design merges functionality with reverence, featuring expansive clear-span hangars that house one of the country’s largest collections of operational historic aircraft.
Constructed using a combination of structural steel and reinforced concrete, the facility accommodates the unique spatial demands of vintage aircraft while allowing for public exhibitions, restoration work, and educational programming under one roof. Large curtain wall glazing at the entry and strategic skylighting bring natural light deep into the space, creating a welcoming environment that highlights the scale and detail of the aircraft on display.
The architecture respects the industrial nature of its setting while emphasizing transparency and openness—echoing the museum’s mission to connect visitors with the stories, innovations, and sacrifices behind each aircraft. From the roar of an engine test to the quiet study of archival exhibits, the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum stands as a proud, working monument to Canada’s aviation legacy.
